Physical Education

"The knowledge and understanding of the physical body, its constitution, function, maintenance, development and condition of health"

Why has physical education programs been eliminated from our school systems when such programs are capable of successfully addressing the obesity crisis and several other health problems? Why is ignorance of the physical body so widespread in our society? Wouldn't personal knowledge of human anatomy, nutrition, exercises, wellness, physique development and dietary consciousness shift the responsibility of health and its maintenance to the individual level, or would that be a nightmare for physicians; disturb the medical profession and send shock waves through the economy?

If you asked the average student to give a description ofthe terms gluteus maximus, esophagus, or even vertebrae, you would probably receive reactions of momentary silence, a distance stare, followed by an upward movement of the shoulders. According to the author Martin L. Gross, ignorance is more than just a social ill, it is a sophisticated conspiracy to manipulate education and maintain control of the social system and its subjects.

"Our natural goals in this world should be to live as long as we possible can and to achieve greater accomplishments as we travel along our journey of life. In making any journey the condition of the vehicle in which you are traveling determines the circumstances of your travel. If the operator of the vehicle is its mechanic there is a sense of confidence and assurance that the operator has in his success of the travel and performance of the vehicle."

Exceptional Education declares that we must now educate the individual to achieve his or her greatest possible level of potentiality. The highest potentiality is realized when the individual achieves an education of the self. No education can possibly claim to be complete without a physical education. In its attempt to be a complete education system of progressivism, Exceptional Education teaches physical education at every level of the student's phases of learning. Human anatomy is taught to inform the student of his body makeup and the functioning of its parts as an organism. Maintenance and hygiene is taught as ways and means of body preservation. Physical fitness, wellness and development of the physique are achieved through the exercises and movements of the practice of martial arts and the participation in athletic activities. Martial arts practice focuses on the development of the body as well as the mind and spirit in a synthesized manner of harmony. No other exercise can compare to the physical development of the self as the practice of martial arts. The major contribution that martial arts offers its practitioners is discipline. Our physical education introduces the martial arts system of Nungkyyii as an art of self-discipline. Athleticism in the form of challenging sports activity is a very entertaining form of physical exercise. For every student to experience participating in sports activities regardless of talent or ability level is very rewarding for the student's physical development and self-development of confidence, morale and esteem. As a mandatory program of participation for all students, our physical education programs demand an enormous size of athletic facility in order to accommodate its concept of development of the physical body of every student. Our concept of physical education demands new facility construction that requires enough gym space to accommodate the athletic activity of every student of the entire school within the hours of operation each day.

A physical education goes hand in hand with a spiritual education. It is an extension of the knowledge of the self from the spiritual realm to the physical realm that raises the individual's consciousness of the self and its place in the universe.
