Nung-Budo-Ky Introduction

At this present time in America, there is a very strong surge of interest in eastern philosophies, doctrines and concepts. The decline in interest and satisfaction with western religion could very well be a stimulant. Western teachers of eastern knowledge are rushing to supply the demands for eastern spiritualism. Masters and Gurus are flocking to America from abroad to serve as authentic authoritarians of the subject matter. Millions of Americans are also dropping out of spiritual schools or failing to reach satisfactory results. The major reason for lack of success with eastern spiritualism for Americans is the lack of self-discipline. Discipline as a cultivating element within our social structure is not strongly required nor emphasized in American culture. Instead of discipline, Americans are accustomed to authority, rules and punishment. In essence, teachers of eastern knowledge are trying to get western minds to adjust and accept eastern spirituality as a superior lifestyle to western culture. Only a select few are willing to empty their cups of western ways and habits and totally adhere to an eastern way of life.

The teachings of eastern knowledge are caught in a serious catch 22 in America. It is impossible to teach a different lifestyle to western minds that fear giving up the material possessions, physical comfort and emotional pleasures of western culture. You can't possibly learn spirituality wearing materialistic armor and embracing worldly possessions. It takes a great deal of discipline, time, patience, diligent work and mundane sacrifices to accomplish spiritual results. This is a difficult task for Americans. Americans are not properly prepared, nor are they equipped enough with discipline and will power to handle the transformation of body and mind in the process of spirituality. This inability to conform spiritually is attributed to an entertaining, instant result, authoritative, pseudo liberated, capitalistic and dehumanizing society. Frustrated and disappointed in American students, teachers of eastern knowledge have somewhat given up on achieving any true spiritual results. Instead, they too are beginning to embrace the benefits of western capitalism, and have begun to get paid rather handsomely for entertaining their students rather than spiritually educating them. This shift (to entertaining students rather than spiritually educating them) carries very strong justifiable logic. It attracts more students. It secures the operation and function of the school financially, and also, the monetary rewards serve as a great incentive for better staff performance.

Masters and Gurus arriving in this country are unprepared for the awesome power of "culture shock" that American culture torpedoes toward their emotions. Materialism and the pleasures that accompany it seem to sweep them off their feet. Many are forced to pack their bags and rush back to their native countries in order to save their own spirituality from the onslaught of American Materialism. Those few Masters and Gurus who manage to survive "culture shock" are probably proud owners of mansions, yachts, Rolls Royces and huge bank accounts. These possessions are probably forcing them into spiritual bankruptcy. A few have even succumbed to the addiction of drugs.

The problem with teaching spirituality in America is that spiritual teachers are consistently trying to inject a spiritual element from a foreign country, into the blood stream of American culture, when the American heart keeps refusing to process strange cultural blood. The solution is to create a spiritual element from within the American culture that flows to and from the American heart, enriching the blood and nourishing the mind and body of Americans with sanity and good health. We call this desperately needed spiritual element Nungkyyii. Nungkyyii is a philosophy that has evolved in the past three decades into a spiritual system of love, activity and consciousness, manifested by the Infinite Mind of Intelligence for the future of American life. Nungkyyii is defined as the science of self-evolution and the art of self-discipline; the philosophical art and practice of obtaining the meaning of life through the expressions of love, faith, intelligence and discipline; total submission and obedience of the law of being; living in the truth and becoming one with the Infinite Mind of Intelligence. Nungkyyii acknowledges "discipline" as the most difficult, yet the most important element in spiritual training. Therefore, the philosophy only expects to spiritually transform only some chosen few elite disciples.

Nungkyyii embraces the nature of American culture (progressive materialism) as a necessary negative (yin). Through spiritual alchemy, executed by the mind, the philosophy turns materialism into a tool of utility and progress for spiritualism (yang). The integration of materialism (yin) and spiritualism (yang) in equilibrium form and in a harmonious expression creates what Vatsyayana (author of the Kama Satra) calls Darshanthe attainment of Dharma, Artha and Kama, or ultimate fulfillment.

Nungkyyii has organized its philosophical system of love, activity and consciousness into a daily routine pattern of ritualistic and ceremonial expressions of Meditation, Divine love and a Rightful Life of Truth. This disciplinary art, ritualistic practice and process of spiritual transformation is called Nung-Budo-Ky. Nung-Budo-Ky can be considered a Zen experience American style.
